Our school has taken on a theme this year of being "bucket fillers," meaning we do our best to make others feel good about themselves. There is a book by Carol McCloud called "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?" that says we all have an imaginary bucket that people either flll up or dip from, depending on how they treat us. I took the idea and made several short films that illustrate it for the kids at Fairmont. This is the first of a series.

Rapoport Academy invited students from WISD, Midway, LeVega, Connally, Vanguard and the Methodist Home U.T. charter school to R.A.'s first annual Clean Energy Conference. The focus was two-fold; renewable energy resources and related career opportunities. Organizing the entire event--obtaining sponsors, speakers, invitations, scheduling, food, etc. was a student-driven STEM project for 2 female students (juniors) as part of a grade requirement. Students (see photo) are intrigued by the technology and applications of solar energy in the TSTC-sponsored Texas Renewable Energy Education Consortium "Green Trailer". Wiley Stem (Asst. City Manager), Ingrid Martine (life coach & community organizer), Norm Burgess (inventor/entrepreneur), Sid Bolfing (TSTC professor/renewable energies)are examples of the outstanding speakers and Rep. "Doc" Anderson supplied an introductory video documentary. Major sponsors were the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, TSTC, Prestige Document Shredding, Hobbs Bonded Fibers, Texas Gen. Land Office, Colcord House B&B, RBDR Architects, Stewart Kelly and Common Grounds. Benefits to students were: gaining a better understanding of renewable resources, spurring a higher level of interest in taking advanced science (pre-and during college), seeing the relationship of science classes to careers and meeting students from other schools who are also interested in science. Participating students, teachers and speakers considered the conference a great success for all involved and are looking forward to the 2nd Annual R.A. Clean Energy conference
