Description:
Right now there are more children in the Franklin County (Missouri) area who need a foster home than there are foster parents. The highest need is for children in their teens. This issue needs to be addressed and that is why I produced this segment. Kids end up in foster care for many reasons; neglect, abuse (both physical and emotional), as well as the abuse of drugs and alcohol by their parents. When parents can't raise their children in a safe environment, that's when it is time for other competent adults to step in because children truly are the future. Clearly, not enough adults are stepping up to become foster parents. That is where this story comes into play. Even if just one caring adult watches this segment, and is moved to become a foster parent, then my mission is complete. Yes, the system can be a challenge, but it's worth it, according to everyone I interviewed. I learned firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate the system while trying to coordinate interviews with state officials and workers. It took months of emails and phone calls to get through the red tape. In the end, it was worth it. Just like being a foster parent is worth it.
