Laptop Journalism Emily Bakalor Marquette High School 138 Alex Deaton is a Senior at Marquette High School in Chesterfield, Missouri. He enjoys listening to music, and playing many instruments such as guitar, piano, trombone, bass, viola, and the harmonica. Music is one of the most important things in Alex’s life. It has helped him through both the good and the bad times. Alex has an adopted brother named Jake who has caused Alex’s family a lot of stress and grief. Jake is currently in jail for committing a violent felony, and will remain there for a while. Alex’s parents had to suffer a great amount because of Jake’s actions, and Alex has witnessed most of it growing up. He retreats to music to “escape” from the reality of his mentally ill brother. Alex states that “music is the most powerful thing in [his] life, and it has helped [him] get through the hardest times.” One experience which sticks best in Alex’s mind is when his brother attempted to stab him with a knife while under the influence. Alex told me that “this is an experience [he] will never forget.” Because of all the mistakes his brother made, Alex vows to never abuse alcohol or drugs. He is thankful that he had his adopted brother as an example to lead him in the opposite direction.
