High school has been a hot topic recurring in Hollywood movies for years. The films’ plots are filled with cliché inaccuracies, portrayed by people who haven’t had a regular high school experience. If people knew what high school was really like, they wouldn’t be so amused. The real problems that come with being a teenager branch in school. At Bellmont Senior High School, teens face problems that range from getting a blemish on picture day to participating in illegal activities. With every difference and pressure that we face, another wall is built between one’s fellow students. Like the cliché high school movies, cliques are formed and separation becomes definite. From the time we as people enter adolescence, we learn the barriers placed in front of our faces. From “jocks” to “nerds,” “art freaks” to “Goths,” “preps” to “trailer trash,” we aren’t the only ones that put us here in our “places.” Society tells us who we are, who we should be, and what we need to succeed as an overall individual. While turning away from the heat of preconceived opinions of peers and society, a person said, “We need to make a change.” And so, senior Brittany Hockemeyer followed her thoughts and with some teachers, organized a group of student leaders from different social groups to help eliminate the barriers we as the student body have built. This group was named “Be the Change.” Our mission as “Be the Change” members is to overcome the walls we have built and learn about each other as the people we really are. We were picked to be a positive influence on our peers. Our group started out uncomfortable. With so many different people, the comfort zones of many were already being tested. That alone was a difficult barrier. Being able to open up and become vulnerable to those around you is quite a task, but it was necessary. We entertained important issues and personal ones. Eventually it became entertaining, learning about each other and becoming familiar with our flaws and strengths. We saw what each other feared and lived for. The activity involving sitting with someone different at lunch brought out the fury in most of the students. It was clear that this sheltered town needed some eye-opening experiences. It’s time that people realize that difference isn’t always bad. So, we took a learning experience and ran with it, exposing the thoughts and feelings of the entire school. Be the Change works for a better tomorrow, hoping to make the high school experience more pleasant. The barriers we have built are deteriorating. Our group has found a way to beat the system that has been claiming our lives for so long. Challenge Day, our strongest attempt at bringing peace to the school, is going to be a day to remember. It will be tough, but our goals will hopefully be met, and we will finally as Mahatma Gandhi said, “…be the change we wish to see in the world.” ~~Cole |O'Beirne|18|12~~Brittney|Hockemeyer|17|12~~Lee|Danels|16|10~~Alyssa|Martin|18|12~~|||
