Description:
In October, 2007, the Student Council at Rapid City Stevens High School added their support to an issue that is both global and at the same time very personal. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we decided that it would be a good time to raise awareness for a local family battling that disease. We really wanted our community to realize the presence of local heroes. Bridget Hansen is a local woman who is near to our hearts, and who is fighting breast cancer again; this is the third very serious battle, and she continues to be strong and victorious. Bridget and her family have been involved in the Rapid City school district forever. She was a librarian at an elementary school (until her illness forced an early retirement), her husband works at a middle school, and all four of her children have gone to school in our district, and to Stevens High School. This is even more personal to members of the Student Council because her daughter is currently one of our members, and one of her sons was the student body Co-President for the 2006-2007 school year. We have been exposed to her greatness of spirit through our relationships with her children. Her family is known and loved by students and staff alike for their kindness and generosity, as well as their constant presence and involvement in school and community activities. On October 21, we hosted a 5K walk-run to raise fund for her family, to help with what we know are enormous expenses. Our community really pulled together for this event. Several local businesses sponsored even t-shirts, others donated prizes to be awarded, and school activity advisors encouraged their groups’ participation. Although the weather that day was cold and windy, over 100 participants came to support this family, and almost $1600 was raised. The Hansen family continued to amaze and impress us with their tendency to look beyond their own problems – they chose to donate some of the money raised to organizations supporting breast cancer research. This event was something that touched the hearts of many of our members, and gave us a somewhat unique opportunity to be part of something so much larger than ourselves. We have even discussed making this an annual event that could benefit many people in our community. We hope that we were able to alleviate, if only a little, one of many stressors in the life of a very ill and very wonderful woman. ~~Brittany |Hiten|17|11~~Heidi |Hansen|16|10~~Ashley |Schilling|16|11~~Ali|Kinzley|17|11~~|||
