Description:
Cans for Canfield! Who would have thought that little pop cans could amount to hundreds of dollars? Here at Canfield Village Middle School in Canfield, Ohio we have been collecting cans for a little over a year. Since this project started, students have been pouring cans into the dumpster at the school. The reason we have been collecting cans is to exchange them for money to help our school rebuild our outdoor track. This project commenced with a sixth grade class’s idea to promote recycling in our community. After talking to the local Green Team, we decided to collect cans to exchange for money to improve the track. After a recent count on January 30, 2008,we have collected 2,963 pounds of aluminum cans this year. For each pound of cans we collect, we earn seventy cents from the Green Team. Although we have unfortunately not reached our goal, we are working hard to raise the $20,000.00 to make our dream of a new track a reality. This drive is meant to help our gym classes and extracurricular sports. The dirt-covered, uneven, and rocky track is very unsafe. Last year a student was running on the track, and accidentally put her foot in a hole and twisted her ankle. This is only one example of the many injuries the track has caused. We hope to replace the rocky track with recycled rubber. Eventually we’d like to add benches and plant trees to make the area more appealing. When this project is completed, it will be accessible to the whole community. This effort has been recognized by local newspapers to encourage residents to contribute their cans. In October of 2007, our school was in a friendly competition with a rival area school to collect the most cans. Due to our hard work and determination, our school came out on top; however we did not win any money in the national competition. We did raise $540.00 last school year. This year we have raised $2,020.90 from our can collecting which gives us a nice platform to begin making the dream of a new track a reality. In conclusion, we have worked extremely hard to improve our school and community through recycling. One popular slogan we use to advertise our can drive is “We’re CANfield, and we CAN do it!” The real fact is that recycling can improve our community. We’re one of those groups who are trying to make our school and community a better place to live. ~~Marissa|Rothbauer|13|7~~Rami|Saker|12|7~~Bailey|Sandin|12|7~~Allison|Popovec|12|7~~Alex|Dechurch|12|7
