OPTICAL ART: The second quarter Middle School Art Classes at Timberlane Regional Middle School created Optical Art designs using pencils, rulers, measured formulas, value scales and color gradations. First Op Art assignment: Students were taught about Victor Vaserelli and Optical Art and how it is closely related to what we learn in geometry class. We then discussed line and concentric circles and how we can combine these simple elements to create a unique design. Students then chose a few colors or values and created their own Op Art design. Students drew concentric circles, and creative lines, after which they drew with colored pencil or magic markers a checker board pattern of two or three different colors. Second Op Art assignments: Students studied: 1. The concept of Math and Art combined: Victor Vasarelli's Optical Art. 2. A geometrical mathmatical formula for creating curves with straight lines. 3. Value and Gradations: value scales, flat, volumetric, and spatial shading.
