Along with plenty of sunshine (hopefully), summer brings with it plenty of opportunities for young people to take part in fun, structured activities that will keep their minds sharp and their bodies healthy over the summer months.
That was the message expressed by local leaders today on the playground of Charles T. Lunsford School No. 19 adjacent to the Flint Street Recreation Center.
âWhen the school doors close, our childrenâs minds donât have to,â said Superintendent of Schools Jean-Claude Brizard. âWith the abundance of opportunities in our city, from science programs to day camps, thereâs no reason why our children and teens canât stay engaged in activities they enjoy that will help them continue to learn and grow.â
âItâs our primary concern to keep our kids safe and healthy during the summer months,â Mayor Robert Duffy said. âThe Cityâs recreation centers are the place you want to be â- free breakfast and lunch programs, swimming lessons and a whole host of supervised fun and educational activities in one location.â
Also reinforcing the importance of structured summer activities were Board of Education President Malik Evans, Board of Education Vice President Van White, City Department of Recreation & Youth Services Commissioner Charles Reaves, and Center for Youth Executive Director and City Council Member Elaine Spaull.
