Born on May 10, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Ochoa’s journey to becoming an astronaut was paved with challenges and triumphs.
From a young age, Ochoa displayed a remarkable aptitude for science and mathematics. Her passion for these subjects led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Stanford University, where she graduated with honors in 1980. Ochoa then went on to earn a Master of Science degree and a Doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford, becoming one of the few Hispanic women to achieve such academic heights.
Ochoa’s impressive academic achievements caught the attention of NASA, and in 1990, she was selected as an astronaut candidate. After completing two years of rigorous training, she became a full-fledged astronaut in 1992, joining an elite group of individuals who had the privilege of exploring the vast expanse of space.
Ochoa’s first space mission was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1993, where she served as a mission specialist. During this mission, she conducted experiments and operated the shuttle’s robotic arm, demonstrating her exceptional skills and expertise. Her successful completion of this mission paved the way for her to become the first Hispanic woman to perform a spacewalk in 1994, during her second mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
Throughout her illustrious career at NASA, Ochoa accumulated over 1,000 hours in space, making her one of the most experienced astronauts in the agency’s history. She also holds the distinction of being the first Hispanic woman to serve as the Director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, a position she held from 2013 to 2018.
