How to Fix a Light Leak in a Hasselblad Film Magazine

Hasselblad cameras are known for their quality and durability, but even the best cameras can experience problems. One common issue is light leaks, which can occur in the film magazine. Light leaks can cause your photos to be overexposed or have a hazy appearance.

If you’re experiencing a light leak in your Hasselblad film magazine, there are a few things you can do to fix it. The most common culprit is a worn-out light seal. This is a thin piece of foam that sits around the film gate and prevents light from entering the magazine. Over time, the light seal can become brittle and crack, allowing light to leak in.

You can purchase replacement light seals online or from a camera repair shop. However, if you’re handy, you can also create your own light seal trap. This is a simple DIY solution that can help to prevent light leaks.

DIY Light Seal Trap

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A piece of black foam rubber
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape

  1. Cut a piece of foam rubber to fit the inside of the film magazine. The foam should be thick enough to cover the light seal area.
  2. Apply double-sided tape to the back of the foam rubber.
  3. Carefully insert the foam rubber into the film magazine, making sure that it is securely attached to the inside of the magazine.

Installing a Factory Light Seal

If you’ve purchased a factory light seal, you can install it by following these steps:

  1. Open the film magazine and remove the old light seal.
  2. Clean the inside of the magazine with a damp cloth.
  3. Apply the new light seal to the inside of the magazine. Make sure that the light seal is properly aligned and that it completely covers the light seal area.

If you’re still experiencing light leaks after replacing the light seal, there may be other issues with your film magazine. Here are a few things to check:

  • Make sure that the film magazine is properly closed and latched.
  • Check for any damage to the film magazine, such as cracks or scratches.
  • If you’re using a film back, make sure that it is properly installed and that the light seal is in good condition.

If you’re still unable to fix the light leak, you may need to take your camera to a professional camera repair shop.
