Due to the American Revolution, several states were in debt.
To increase financial stability, the federal government imposed an excise tax on whiskey.
In 1794, there was an uprising of farmers and distillers from Pennsylvania to protest the whiskey tax.
They argued that the tax was unfair to small producers. This began what is called the Whiskey Rebellion.
Aggression with tax collectors continued for the following years until President Washington sent in troops to stop the rebellion.
Anger from the tax and rebellion helped the Republicans gain support to eventually overtake the Federalist Party in 1802.
