Imagine a billion-dollar spacecraft, millions of miles from home, suddenly spinning out of control. That was the reality for NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1998 when their prized Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, experienced a near-fatal malfunction. Finally, using a powerful radar signal, engineers managed to re-establish contact. But with its gyroscopes out of commission, how could they possibly regain control of a billion-dollar spacecraft a million and a half kilometers away?

The answer lay in an ingenious solution: using SOHO's reaction wheels, typically used for turning, to stabilize the spacecraft. These wheels, when spun, would cause an equal and opposite reaction, counteracting SOHO's uncontrolled rotation. By September, thanks to this innovative approach, SOHO was back on track, its new stabilization system proving even more precise than the original gyroscopes.

This near-death experience marked a turning point for SOHO. Not only did it survive, but it thrived, continuing to send back groundbreaking data for over two decades. SOHO's observations have painted a picture of a dynamic and often violent Sun, far more complex than previously imagined.

But SOHO's surprises didn't end there. The spacecraft, designed to study the Sun, unexpectedly became a comet-hunting extraordinaire. By blocking out the Sun's glare to observe its corona, SOHO inadvertently created the perfect conditions for spotting these elusive celestial wanderers. To date, SOHO has discovered thousands of comets, many of them 'sungrazers' that skim perilously close to the Sun, offering valuable insights into the early solar system.

SOHO's story is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of perseverance. What began as a mission to study the Sun evolved into a journey of discovery that far exceeded anyone's expectations.
