⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Walking Insect Robot - DIY

Grade Level: 7-9

Subject: Science and Engineering

Duration: 90 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow multistep instructions when carrying out experiments or technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6-8.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the basic principles of robotics and mechanical engineering.
- Students will understand the components and techniques involved in constructing a walking insect robot.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and science behind making a walking insect robot.

- Cardboard
- Popsicle sticks
- Rubber bands
- Craft sticks
- Small DC motors
- Battery holder with wires
- Batteries
- Hot glue gun (teacher's supervision required)
- Scissors
- Markers

1. Begin the lesson by discussing the principles of robotics and mechanical engineering, emphasizing the importance of designing and building functional robots.
2. Show examples or videos of DIY walking insect robots, explaining the components and mechanisms involved.
3. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own walking insect robot using simple materials.
4. Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with the necessary materials.
5. Instruct the students to design and cut out the body of the insect robot using cardboard. Encourage them to be creative with the shape and size.
6. Attach craft sticks to the underside of the cardboard body using hot glue, creating legs for the robot.
7. Attach small DC motors to the front and back of the cardboard body using hot glue. Ensure that the rotors of the motors are aligned with the craft stick legs.
8. Connect the wires of the DC motors to the battery holder, ensuring a secure connection.
9. Insert batteries into the battery holder and turn on the motors. Observe as the legs of the robot begin to move, creating a walking motion.
10. Encourage students to experiment with different leg designs, motor placements, and walking patterns to optimize the performance of their walking insect robot.
11. Discuss the science behind the walking motion, explaining how the rotation of the motors transfers to the legs through the craft sticks, creating a walking motion similar to that of an insect.
12. Have students present their walking insect robots to the class, explaining their design choices and demonstrating the functionality.

- Observe students' engagement and understanding during the construction and operation of the walking insect robot.
- Evaluate students' comprehension of the scientific principles through class discussions and their ability to explain the steps and science behind making the robot.
