Long before Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, British slaves from the Carolinas sought freedom by heading south to Florida. Spain promised freedom to anyone who made their way through the harsh wilderness to a place called Fort Mose just north of St. Augustine.

We visit the site, which is now a historic state park, on a special weekend during Black History Month where re-enactors brought this underlooked part of American history to life.
