Lesson Plan: Bending and Flexing: Kids Meet a Talented Contortionist!
Grade Levels: 1-4
Objective:
- To introduce students to the art of contortion and the flexibility of the human body.
- To promote body awareness, appreciation for different talents, and respect for diverse abilities.
- To encourage creativity and movement exploration through contortion-inspired activities.
Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.1: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.4: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes.
Materials:
- Visual aids or videos showcasing contortionists
- Stretching mats or yoga mats
- Music player for background music
- Paper and pencils for reflection and discussion
Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of contortion and what it means to be flexible.
- Show visual aids or videos of contortionists, highlighting their incredible abilities and unique performances.
2. Meet the Contortionist (15 minutes)
- Invite a contortionist to visit the class and demonstrate their skills.
- Allow students to ask questions about contortion and the contortionist's experiences.
3. Stretching and Body Awareness (20 minutes)
- Lead the class in a warm-up stretching session, emphasizing the importance of proper form and listening to their bodies.
- Guide students through various stretches, encouraging them to notice how their bodies feel and how far they can comfortably stretch.
4. Contortion-Inspired Movement Exploration (30 minutes)
- Play some background music and encourage students to explore different movements inspired by contortion.
- Prompt them to experiment with stretching, bending, twisting, and balancing in creative and safe ways.
- Provide opportunities for students to share their movements with the class.
5. Reflection and Discussion (15 minutes)
- Distribute reflection sheets to students and have them individually reflect on their experience with the contortionist and the movement exploration.
- Facilitate a class discussion where students can share their thoughts, describe their favorite movements, and express their appreciation for the contortionist's talent.
- Discuss the importance of body awareness, respecting different abilities, and nurturing creativity.
