Lesson Plan: Celebrating Differences: Kids Meet and Learn from a Little Person!
Grade Levels: K-5
Objective:
- To introduce students to individuals with dwarfism and promote understanding, empathy, and inclusivity.
- To educate students about dwarfism, its causes, and challenges faced by individuals with dwarfism.
- To foster respect and appreciation for diversity and encourage positive interactions with others.
Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Materials:
- Guest speaker who is a little person or videos featuring a little person
- Age-appropriate books or resources about dwarfism
- Paper and pencils for students to write or draw their thoughts
Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of acceptance, inclusivity, and respect for others, regardless of their differences.
- Introduce the concept of dwarfism and explain that some individuals are born with a condition that causes them to be smaller in stature.
2. Guest Speaker or Video Presentation (20 minutes)
- Invite a little person to speak to the students about their experiences, or show videos featuring a little person sharing their story.
- The speaker or videos should cover topics such as daily life, challenges, achievements, and positive aspects of being a little person.
3. Reading and Discussion (15 minutes)
- Read an age-appropriate book or share resources about dwarfism with the students.
- Engage students in a discussion about what they have learned, encouraging questions and promoting understanding.
4. Empathy and Perspective-Taking Activity (15 minutes)
- Divide students into pairs or small groups.
- Provide each group with a scenario or situation that may present challenges for a little person (e.g., reaching high shelves, using public transportation).
- Instruct students to discuss and brainstorm possible solutions or adaptations that could help make the situation more accessible and inclusive.
5. Reflection and Creative Expression (10 minutes)
- Distribute paper and pencils to students.
- Instruct students to write or draw about their thoughts, feelings, and any new insights gained from the lesson.
- Allow students to share their reflections with the class, fostering a sense of shared learning and appreciation for diversity.
