⁣⁣Lesson Plan: Concrete Creations: 9 Simple DIY Projects to Enhance Your Home

Grade Level: 9-12

Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will learn how to create simple concrete projects to enhance their homes. They will develop skills in craftsmanship, creativity, and practical application of basic construction techniques.

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.3: Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSN.Q.A.1: Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems.

Materials:
- Concrete mix
- Water
- Mixing container
- Molds (can be purchased or made from household items)
- Reinforcement materials (optional, such as wire mesh or rebar)
- Protective gloves
- Safety goggles
- Writing materials for note-taking and reflection

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Engage students in a discussion about the versatility and durability of concrete as a construction material.
- Introduce the concept of DIY concrete projects to enhance the home.

2. Safety Measures (5 minutes):
- Instruct students to put on protective gloves and safety goggles before handling concrete.
- Emphasize the importance of safety precautions when working with construction materials.

3. Project Selection (10 minutes):
- Present students with a list of 9 simple concrete projects for the home (e.g., planters, coasters, bookends, stepping stones).
- Have them select a project they find interesting and suitable for their home.

4. Planning and Design (15 minutes):
- Instruct students to sketch a design and plan the dimensions of their chosen project.
- Encourage them to consider practicality, aesthetics, and functionality in their design.

5. Mixing Concrete (10 minutes):
- Demonstrate the proper ratio of concrete mix to water for achieving the desired consistency.
- Instruct students to mix the concrete in a container, following the instructions on the packaging.

6. Molding and Reinforcement (15 minutes):
- Instruct students to prepare their molds and apply a release agent if necessary.
- If using reinforcement materials, demonstrate how to place them in the mold to enhance strength.

7. Pouring and Leveling (15 minutes):
- Instruct students to pour the mixed concrete into their molds, taking care to distribute it evenly.
- Demonstrate how to level the concrete and remove any air bubbles using a trowel or vibrating tool.

8. Curing and Finishing (20 minutes):
- Explain the importance of curing concrete for strength and durability.
- Instruct students to cover their projects with plastic or damp cloths and allow them to cure for the recommended time.
- Demonstrate various finishing techniques (e.g., polishing, staining, painting) to enhance the appearance of the cured concrete.

9. Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes):
- Lead a class discussion on the challenges and successes students encountered during the concrete project.
- Encourage students to reflect on the practicality and aesthetics of their finished projects.
