Lesson Plan: ⁣Cravings Revisited: Kids Take on Their Mom's Pregnancy Cravings - Part 2!


Grade Levels: 4-9

Objective:
- To engage students in a fun and educational activity that explores different pregnancy cravings.
- To promote empathy and understanding towards pregnant individuals and their unique experiences.
- To encourage creativity and critical thinking through the creation of their own pregnancy-inspired snack.

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.WHST.9-10.2.B: Develop the topic with well-chosen, relevant, and sufficient facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience's knowledge of the topic.

Materials:
- List of common pregnancy cravings (pickles and ice cream, chocolate-covered pickles, etc.)
- Ingredients for chosen pregnancy cravings
- Cooking equipment and utensils
- Paper and pencils for reflection and discussion

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the unique food cravings that some pregnant individuals experience.
- Talk about the reasons behind pregnancy cravings and how they can vary from person to person.

2. Pregnancy Cravings Exploration (20 minutes)
- Present a list of common pregnancy cravings to the students.
- Divide students into small groups and assign each group a different craving to research.
- Instruct students to find out the origins of the craving, possible reasons why pregnant individuals may crave it, and any cultural significance associated with it.

3. Snack Creation (30 minutes)
- After researching their assigned craving, have each group create their own pregnancy-inspired snack using the provided ingredients.
- Encourage students to think creatively and combine unexpected flavors or ingredients.

4. Snack Tasting and Reflection (20 minutes)
- Allow each group to share their pregnancy-inspired snack with the rest of the class.
- Facilitate a discussion where students can reflect on the taste, texture, and overall experience of each snack.
- Encourage students to discuss the connection between their snack and the original pregnancy craving they researched.

5. Discussion and Empathy (15 minutes)
- Lead a class discussion on empathy and understanding towards pregnant individuals.
- Ask students to reflect on how the activity helped them gain insight into the unique experiences of pregnant individuals.
- Discuss the importance of being supportive and accommodating to others' cravings and preferences.
