- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
- ½ cup buttermilk

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the flavors and traditions associated with pumpkin-based desserts during the fall season.
- Engage students in a conversation about their favorite pumpkin treats and their understanding of pumpkin as an ingredient.

2. Pumpkin Cake Batter Preparation (20 minutes)
- Instruct students to preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until well combined.
- In a separate large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Mix in the pumpkin puree until incorporated.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture and buttermilk to the pumpkin mixture, alternating between the two, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix well after each addition.

3. Baking and Cooling (30 minutes)
- Divide the pumpkin cake batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

4. Frosting and Decorating (15 minutes)
- Introduce various frosting options for pumpkin cakes, such as cream cheese frosting, cinnamon buttercream, or maple glaze.
- Demonstrate how to frost and layer the cooled cake with the chosen frosting, using a spatula or piping bag for decorative accents.
- Encourage students to get creative with decorating the pumpkin cake, using pumpkin-shaped candies, toasted pecans, or fall-themed sprinkles as garnishes.

5. Reflection and Tasting (10 minutes)
- Lead a discussion on the process of making homemade pumpkin cakes and the versatility of pumpkin as a flavor in desserts.
- Encourage students to describe the taste, texture, and aroma of the pumpkin cake they made.
- Allow students to enjoy a slice of their pumpkin cake creation or consider sharing it with classmates, teachers, or family members.
