Objective:
- To introduce elementary students to the process of making delicious chocolate cupcakes.
- To enhance students' understanding of measuring ingredients, following a recipe, and basic baking techniques.
- To encourage creativity in decorating and personalizing their cupcakes.

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.3: Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.

Materials:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- Cupcake liners
- Cupcake pan
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk or electric mixer
- Spatula

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the popularity of cupcakes and the joy of homemade treats.
- Engage students in a conversation about their favorite cupcake flavors and the appeal of chocolate cupcakes.

2. Explaining Ingredient Measurements (15 minutes)
- Discuss the importance of measuring ingredients accurately and the role each ingredient plays in the cupcakes' texture and flavor.
- Demonstrate how to measure ingredients using measuring cups and spoons.

3. Cupcake Batter Preparation (20 minutes)
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Instruct students to crack the eggs into a separate bowl and whisk them lightly.
- In a larger mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract using an electric mixer or whisk.
- Instruct students to gradually add the whisked eggs to the sugar-oil mixture, mixing well after each addition.

4. Dry Ingredient Incorporation (10 minutes)
- Instruct students to add the dry ingredient mixture to the sugar-oil-egg mixture alternately with the whole milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Demonstrate how to mix the batter gently with a spatula until just combined, avoiding overmixing.

5. Cupcake Baking (15 minutes)
- Line the cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
- Show students how to use a spoon or an ice cream scoop to portion the cupcake batter evenly into the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
- Instruct students to preheat the oven to the recommended temperature and bake the cupcakes for the specified time.

6. Cooling and Decorating (15 minutes)
- Instruct students to allow the baked cupcakes to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
- Discuss various frosting options and encourage students to get creative in decorating their cupcakes with sprinkles, chocolate chips, or other toppings.

7. Reflection and Tasting (10 minutes)
- Lead a discussion on the taste, texture, and appearance of the chocolate cupcakes.
