Grade Level: 3-5

Subject: Social Studies/Character Education

Duration: 45 minutes

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

- Students will reflect on the meaning of gift-giving during Christmas.
- Students will analyze the significance of thoughtful and meaningful gifts.
- Students will discuss and express their opinions on the value of experiences over material possessions.

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the holiday season and the tradition of gift-giving during Christmas.
- Ask students to share their experiences and feelings about receiving gifts.

2. Group Discussion (15 minutes):
- Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a set of guiding questions related to the meaning of gift-giving.
- Instruct the groups to discuss and share their thoughts on the importance of thoughtful and meaningful gifts.
- Encourage students to consider the value of experiences and memories over material possessions.

3. Whole Class Sharing (10 minutes):
- Ask each group to share their key ideas and insights with the whole class.
- Facilitate a discussion, allowing students to express their opinions and build on one another's ideas.

4. Opinion Writing (10 minutes):
- Instruct students to individually write a short opinion piece on the value of experiences and meaningful gifts during Christmas.
- Provide a prompt such as: "Write a paragraph explaining why thoughtful and meaningful gifts, such as experiences, are more valuable than material possessions during Christmas."
- Encourage students to support their opinions with reasons and information from the group discussion.

5. Sharing and Reflection (5 minutes):
- Allow students to voluntarily share their opinion pieces with the class.
- Conclude the lesson by asking students to reflect on what they have learned and how it might influence their own gift-giving practices.
