- To encourage creativity in waffle toppings and presentation.

Common Core Standards:

Materials:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 ¾ cups milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Waffle iron
- Cooking spray or melted butter
- Whisk or electric mixer
- Mixing bowls

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the popularity of waffles as a breakfast favorite and the different ways they can be enjoyed.
- Engage students in a conversation about their favorite waffle toppings and their understanding of the basic ingredients in waffle batter.

2. Waffle Batter Preparation (20 minutes)
- Instruct students to preheat the waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, whisking until combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredient mixture, whisking until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; some lumps are okay.

3. Cooking the Waffles (30 minutes)
- Lightly coat the preheated waffle iron with cooking spray or melted butter.
- Pour the appropriate amount of waffle batter onto the center of the waffle iron, following the size guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
- Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp, usually 3-5 minutes.
- Carefully remove the waffles from the iron using a fork or tongs, and transfer them to a serving plate or cooling rack.

4. Toppings and Presentation (15 minutes)
- Introduce various waffle toppings and accompaniments, such as fresh fruits, whipped cream, syrup, nut butter, or chocolate chips.
- Demonstrate different ways to arrange and present the waffles, such as stacking them or creating a waffle bar with various toppings for customization.
- Encourage students to get creative with their waffle toppings, experimenting with different combinations and flavors.

5. Reflection and Tasting (10 minutes)
- Lead a discussion on the process of making homemade waffles and the importance of precise ingredient measurements for achieving a perfect texture.
- Encourage students to describe the taste, texture, and appearance of their waffles.
- Allow students to enjoy their freshly made waffles, either individually or as a group breakfast celebration.
