Did you know Marie Curie got her education at a secret institution called Floating University since she was barred from going to college? Marie Curie’s life was fascinating! This video does an excellent job of providing her biography to students in an engaging way.
An interesting way to incorporate this video in your chemistry lesson is through scientific observation. After watching the video, have students explore what it would have been like for Marie Curie in her lab. Have students make observations about a different, much safer element or substance. Have students document what happens when the substance is exposed to different environments, (i.e. water, heat, freezing, darkness, etc.). This activity can be scaled for various grade levels. Younger class may want to do simple experiments on table salt, while high school chemistry class may have access to more advanced chemicals and tools. The goal of the activity is to learn about scientific observation.
