⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a 4-ply Face Mask Using Tissue

Grade Level: 9-12

Subject: Health Education and Life Skills

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the importance of wearing face masks in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
- Students will learn how to make a 4-ply face mask using tissue as a DIY alternative.
- Students will be able to follow a multistep procedure, measure and cut materials, and explain the purpose and effectiveness of the face mask.

Materials:
- Tissue paper (4-ply)
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Stapler
- Elastic bands
- Safety pins
- Safety goggles

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of wearing face masks in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.
2. Explain to the students that they will be learning how to make a 4-ply face mask using tissue as a DIY alternative.
3. Show images or videos of different types of face masks to engage students' curiosity and interest.
4. Divide the students into pairs or small groups and provide each group with the necessary materials.
5. Instruct the students to measure and cut four pieces of tissue paper, each measuring approximately 7 inches by 7 inches.
6. Demonstrate how to stack the tissue paper pieces on top of each other, forming a 4-ply layer.
7. Instruct the students to fold the stack of tissue paper accordion-style, with each fold measuring approximately 1 inch.
8. Show students how to staple the folded tissue paper along one of the short edges, making sure all layers are secured together.
9. Instruct the students to attach elastic bands to the stapled edge of the tissue paper, using safety pins to secure them in place.
10. Discuss safety precautions, emphasizing the importance of wearing safety goggles and handling the face mask responsibly.
11. Instruct the students to wear the face masks they have made and practice putting them on and taking them off properly.
12. Encourage students to discuss and explain the purpose and effectiveness of the 4-ply face mask using scientific and health-related terms.
13. Have students reflect on their experience and share any modifications or improvements they would make to their homemade face masks.

Assessment:
- Evaluate students' understanding of the importance of wearing face masks and their ability to follow a multistep procedure through class discussions and their explanations of the purpose and effectiveness of the 4-ply face mask.
- Observe students' engagement and adherence to safety guidelines during the construction and use of their homemade face masks.
