⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Humidifier at Home

Duration: 60 minutes

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the importance of humidity and its effects on health and comfort.
- Students will understand the steps and engineering principles involved in making a homemade humidifier.
- Students will be able to follow a multistep procedure, measure and assemble components, and document their process and results.

Materials:
- Plastic bottle (1-liter size)
- Cotton balls
- Scissors
- Rubber band
- Water
- Hygrometer (optional)
- Safety goggles

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of humidity and its effects on health and comfort.
2. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own homemade humidifier using the provided materials.
3. Show images or videos of homemade humidifiers to engage students' curiosity and interest.
4. Divide the students into pairs or small groups and provide each group with the necessary materials.
5. Instruct the students to cut the plastic bottle in half, creating a top and a bottom section.
6. Demonstrate how to wet several cotton balls and place them in the bottom section of the bottle.
7. Instruct the students to follow the same procedure, filling the bottom section of their bottle with wet cotton balls.
8. Show students how to place the top section of the bottle upside down over the bottom section, creating a humidifier chamber.
9. Instruct the students to secure the two halves of the bottle together using a rubber band.
10. Discuss safety precautions, emphasizing the importance of wearing safety goggles and handling the humidifier responsibly.
11. Instruct the students to fill the top section of the bottle with water, allowing it to slowly drip onto the cotton balls.
12. Encourage students to observe and measure the humidity levels using a hygrometer, if available.
13. Have students document their process, including measurements, observations, and any modifications made to their homemade humidifiers.
14. Facilitate a class discussion where students can share their experiences, discuss the effectiveness of their humidifiers, and suggest improvements.

Assessment:
- Evaluate students' understanding of the importance of humidity and the engineering principles involved in making a homemade humidifier through class discussions and their ability to document their process and results.
- Observe students' engagement and adherence to safety guidelines during the construction and use of their homemade humidifiers.
