⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Rain Fountain

Grade Level: 3-5

Subject: Science and Art

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.4: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the water cycle and the concept of rain.
- Students will understand the components and techniques involved in creating a rain fountain.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and science behind making a rain fountain.

Materials:
- Large clear plastic container or glass jar
- Small rocks or pebbles
- Water
- Food coloring (optional)
- Plastic wrap
- Rubber band
- Scissors
- Markers or paint (for decorating the container)

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the water cycle and the concept of rain. Explain how rain is formed and its importance in the cycle of water on Earth.
2. Show images or videos of rain fountains, explaining the components and mechanisms involved.
3. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own rain fountain using simple materials.
4. Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with the necessary materials.
5. Instruct the students to decorate their plastic container or glass jar using markers or paint. Encourage them to be creative with their designs.
6. Fill the container about halfway with small rocks or pebbles. This will serve as the base of the rain fountain.
7. Fill the container with water, leaving some space at the top.
8. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the water to make it more visually appealing.
9. Cut a piece of plastic wrap large enough to cover the opening of the container. Secure it in place using a rubber band, creating a tight seal.
10. Place the rain fountain in a sunny location, preferably near a window.
11. Observe as the water in the container heats up due to the sunlight. Condensation will form on the plastic wrap and eventually drip down like rain.
12. Discuss the science behind the rain fountain, explaining how the heat from the sun causes the water to evaporate, rise, and eventually condense on the cooler plastic wrap, mimicking the process of rain formation.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and understanding during the construction and operation of the rain fountain.
- Evaluate students' comprehension of the scientific concepts through class discussions and their ability to explain the steps and science behind making the fountain.
