Grade Levels: 7-9

Objective:
- To engage students in a friendly taste test competition between New York thin crust and Chicago deep dish pizzas.
- To develop critical thinking skills by analyzing and comparing the characteristics of each style.
- To promote cultural appreciation and understanding through food experiences.

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.1: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

Materials:
- New York-style thin crust pizza
- Chicago-style deep dish pizza
- Plates, napkins, and utensils for tasting
- Paper and pencils for reflection and discussion

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the popularity of pizza and how different regions have their own unique styles.
- Show pictures or videos of New York thin crust and Chicago deep dish pizzas to introduce the concept and spark interest.

2. Pizza Tasting and Comparison (30 minutes)
- Serve slices of New York thin crust and Chicago deep dish pizzas to each student.
- Instruct students to taste both styles, considering the crust, sauce, cheese, and overall flavor profiles.
- Encourage students to discuss and compare the characteristics of each style, noting differences in texture, thickness, and taste.
