⁣Lesson Plan: Amazing Smoke Tricks and Science Experiments

Grade Level: 9-12

Subject: Chemistry and Physics

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the properties and behavior of smoke in relation to chemistry and physics principles.
- Students will understand the techniques and safety precautions involved in performing smoke tricks and experiments.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and science behind each smoke trick and experiment.

Materials:
- Matches or lighters
- Various substances that produce smoke when burned (incense, dry ice, colored smoke pellets, etc.)
- Clear containers or jars
- Safety goggles
- Fire extinguisher (as a safety precaution)
- Ventilated area or fume hood (if available)

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the properties of smoke and its behavior, emphasizing the chemical and physical processes involved.
2. Show examples or videos of different smoke tricks and science experiments, highlighting the safety precautions and scientific principles behind each.
3. Explain to the students that they will be performing a series of smoke tricks and experiments.
4. Ensure that safety measures are in place, such as wearing safety goggles and having a fire extinguisher nearby.
5. Demonstrate the first smoke trick or experiment, explaining the materials, procedure, and the science behind it.
6. Instruct the students to perform the smoke trick or experiment individually or in groups, following the demonstrated procedure.
7. Encourage students to record their observations and measurements during each smoke trick or experiment.
8. Discuss the scientific principles involved in each smoke trick or experiment, including combustion, chemical reactions, and the behavior of smoke particles.
9. Repeat steps 5-8 for the remaining smoke tricks or experiments, allowing students to rotate and try different ones.
10. Conclude the lesson by discussing the applications of these smoke tricks and experiments in real-world scenarios, such as in theatrical productions or air quality studies.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and understanding during the performance of smoke tricks and experiments.
- Evaluate students' comprehension of the scientific principles through class discussions and their ability to explain the steps and science behind each trick or experiment.
