⁣Lesson Plan: Exploring Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio through Reviews with Kids

Grade Level: 6-8

Subject: Art / Language Arts

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.1: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Objectives:
- Students will learn about the Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio art installation.
- Students will read and analyze reviews to gather information about the installation.
- Students will write their own reviews, demonstrating clear and coherent writing.

Materials:
- Reviews of Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio (printed or digital)
- Writing materials (paper, pens/pencils) or computers for writing reviews

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of art installations and their ability to transform spaces.
- Introduce Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio as an immersive light installation that combines art and nature.

2. Reading and Analyzing Reviews (20 minutes):
- Provide students with reviews of Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio.
- Instruct students to read the reviews and cite textual evidence to support their analysis of the installation.
- Encourage students to identify explicit information as well as make inferences based on the text.

3. Group Discussion and Information Gathering (15 minutes):

Bruce Munro's Field of Light in Paso Robles has been on our radar for years. The small canyon is absolutely beautiful, and it’s hard not to get caught up by the amazing site. The 15-acre walk-through experience is made from almost 60000 stemmed spheres running on solar power. Sensorio’s second installation called, “Light Towers” made from over 17000 wine bottles is also nice. While the name is a bit on the nose, the columns make for a fun area with enough light to take some photos. #fieldoflightWe really enjoyed our time visiting the Festival of Light. While it’s not for everyone, It’s a unique experience that we recommend if you’re looking for something visually appealing that’ll leave an impression on you.
