⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a 3D Hologram Video Projector at Home

Grade Level: K-12

Subject: Technology/Engineering

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the basic principles of optics and projection.
- Students will learn how to create a homemade 3D hologram video projector using simple materials.
- Students will be able to explain the science behind the creation of 3D holographic images.

Materials:
- Clear plastic CD case
- Ruler
- Pen or marker
- Smartphone or tablet
- Transparent plastic sheet or clear plastic wrap
- Scissors
- Tape

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concepts of optics and projection with the students. Introduce key vocabulary terms such as refraction, reflection, and holography.
2. Show the students examples of 3D hologram videos or images to familiarize them with the concept and application.
3. Explain to the students that they will be making their own 3D hologram video projector using simple materials.
4. Distribute the materials to each student or group of students.
5. Using the ruler and pen, instruct the students to draw a trapezoid shape on the transparent plastic sheet or clear plastic wrap. The trapezoid should have a base of 6 cm and a height of 3 cm.
6. Cut out the trapezoid shape carefully.
7. Open the CD case and remove the CD. Place the trapezoid shape on the CD case cover and trace the shape four times, creating four trapezoid outlines.
8. Use the scissors to carefully cut out the four trapezoid shapes from the CD case cover.
9. Tape the four trapezoid shapes together to form a pyramid-like structure. Make sure the trapezoid shapes are aligned properly.
10. Place the pyramid structure on top of the smartphone or tablet screen, with the pointed end facing down.
11. Find a 3D hologram video or image online and play it on the device.
12. Turn off the lights in the room and observe the holographic image projecting from the pyramid structure.
13. Allow students to experiment with different hologram videos or images to see how they appear in the projector.
14. Have students record their observations and findings in a technology journal or worksheet.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and participation during the activity.
- Review students' technology journal entries or worksheets for understanding of the concepts and ability to explain the science behind the creation of 3D holographic images.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3
