⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make an Automatic Bird Water Feeder at Home

Grade Level: K-12

Subject: Science/Crafts

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.3: Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the importance of providing water for birds and the benefits of an automatic bird water feeder.
- Students will learn how to design and create a homemade automatic bird water feeder using simple materials.
- Students will be able to explain the engineering principles behind the functioning of the automatic bird water feeder.

Materials:
- Large plastic bottle with a cap
- String or wire
- Small plastic container or dish
- Scissors
- Drill or hammer and nail
- Water

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of providing water for birds and the benefits of an automatic bird water feeder.
2. Show the students examples of automatic bird water feeders to familiarize them with the concept and application.
3. Explain to the students that they will be designing and creating their own homemade automatic bird water feeder using simple materials.
4. Distribute the materials to each student or group of students.
5. Instruct the students to start by cleaning and preparing the large plastic bottle, removing any labels or stickers.
6. Using scissors or a knife, carefully cut a small hole near the bottom of the plastic bottle.
7. Attach a string or wire to the bottle cap, creating a loop or handle for hanging the feeder.
8. Using a drill or a hammer and nail, create small drainage holes in the bottom of the small plastic container or dish.
9. Place the small plastic container or dish upside down on a flat surface, and position the plastic bottle on top of it, aligning the hole in the bottle with the drainage holes in the container.
10. Secure the plastic bottle to the small container or dish by tying or fastening it with string or wire.
11. Fill the plastic bottle with water, making sure it flows through the hole and fills the small container or dish.
12. Hang the homemade automatic bird water feeder in a suitable location, ensuring it is stable and easily accessible to birds.
13. Observe and document the birds that visit the feeder over a period of time, noting their behavior and the impact of the automatic water source.
14. Discuss with students the engineering principles behind the functioning of the automatic bird water feeder, such as gravity and water pressure.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and participation during the activity.
- Evaluate students' understanding of the engineering principles behind the automatic bird water feeder through class discussions.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.3
