⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Floating Faucet Fountain

Grade Level: 4-6

Subject: Engineering and Physics

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.4-5.3: Follow multistep instructions when carrying out experiments or technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4-5.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the principles of buoyancy and water pressure in relation to creating a floating faucet fountain.
- Students will understand the components and techniques involved in constructing a floating faucet fountain.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and science behind the floating faucet fountain.

Materials:
- Plastic bottle (empty and clean)
- Small plastic funnel
- Clear plastic tube or flexible straw
- Water source (e.g., sink or bucket)
- Waterproof sealant or adhesive
- Scissors
- Tape
- Water

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of buoyancy and water pressure, emphasizing their roles in the floating faucet fountain.
2. Show examples or videos of different floating faucet fountains, explaining the components and mechanisms involved.
3. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own floating faucet fountain using simple materials.
4. Distribute the materials to each student or group of students.
5. Instruct the students to cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic bottle large enough to fit the small plastic funnel.
6. Attach the plastic funnel to the hole in the bottle using waterproof sealant or adhesive, ensuring a watertight seal.
7. Cut a section of the clear plastic tube or flexible straw and connect it to the small end of the plastic funnel, securing it with tape.
8. Place the plastic bottle with the attached funnel and tube in a water source, such as a sink or bucket.
9. Turn on the water source to allow water to flow through the tube and out of the faucet-like end.
10. Observe as the water flows out of the faucet-like end and creates a floating faucet effect.
11. Explain the scientific principles involved in creating the floating faucet fountain, such as the balance of buoyant and gravitational forces, and the role of water pressure.
12. Encourage students to experiment with different water flow rates and adjustments to the fountain's design to improve the floating faucet effect.
13. Discuss the various applications and uses of floating faucet fountains, such as in decorative water features or illusions.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and understanding during the construction of the floating faucet fountain.
- Evaluate students' comprehension of the scientific principles through class discussions and their ability to explain the steps and science behind the fountain.
