⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Hand-Powered USB Phone Charger DIY

Grade Level: 10-12

Subject: Engineering and Technology

Duration: 90 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.3: Follow multistep instructions when carrying out experiments or technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the principles of energy conversion and electrical circuits in relation to creating a hand-powered USB phone charger.
- Students will understand the components and techniques involved in constructing a hand-powered USB phone charger.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and science behind the hand-powered USB phone charger.

Materials:
- DC motor
- Hand-crank or generator
- Diode
- Capacitor
- Voltage regulator
- USB connector
- Wires
- Multimeter
- Small electronic components (resistors, capacitors, etc.)
- Soldering iron (optional)
- Safety goggles

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of energy conversion and electrical circuits, emphasizing their roles in creating a hand-powered USB phone charger.
2. Show examples or videos of different hand-powered USB phone chargers, explaining the components and mechanisms involved.
3. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own hand-powered USB phone charger using simple materials.
4. Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with the necessary materials.
5. Instruct the students to connect the DC motor to the hand-crank or generator, ensuring a secure connection.
6. Connect a diode to the terminals of the DC motor to convert the alternating current (AC) generated by the hand-crank into direct current (DC).
7. Attach a capacitor to the output of the diode to store and stabilize the electrical energy.
8. Connect a voltage regulator to the capacitor to regulate the voltage output to a safe level for charging a phone.
9. Attach a USB connector to the output of the voltage regulator, ensuring the correct polarity.
10. Test the output voltage using a multimeter to ensure it is within the acceptable range for phone charging.
11. Encourage students to experiment with different hand-crank speeds and resistor values to optimize the charging performance.
12. Discuss the various applications and uses of hand-powered USB phone chargers, such as in emergency situations or outdoor activities.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and understanding during the construction of the hand-powered USB phone charger.
- Evaluate students' comprehension of the scientific principles through class discussions and their ability to explain the steps and science behind the charger.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
