⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Simple Wall Mounted Foot Operated Hand Sanitizer Dispenser DIY

Grade Level: 3-5

Subject: Science and Technology

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.3-5.3: Follow a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3-5.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the importance of hand hygiene and the role of hand sanitizers in preventing the spread of germs.
- Students will learn about the engineering and design process involved in making a simple wall-mounted foot-operated hand sanitizer dispenser.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and techniques used to make the hand sanitizer dispenser.

Materials:
- Empty plastic bottle (clean and dry)
- Scissors
- Wooden board or sturdy material for mounting
- Hinges
- Rubber bands or springs
- Foot pedal (can be repurposed from an old toy or made using cardboard and strong adhesive tape)
- Hand sanitizer
- Screws or nails for mounting

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of hand hygiene and the role of hand sanitizers in preventing the spread of germs.
2. Show the students examples of hand sanitizer dispensers or use images/videos to familiarize them with the final product.
3. Explain to the students that they will be designing and creating their own wall-mounted foot-operated hand sanitizer dispenser.
4. Distribute the materials to each student or group of students.
5. Instruct the students to cut a hole in the plastic bottle cap that is large enough for the hand sanitizer to flow through.
6. Attach the hinges to the wooden board, ensuring they are securely fastened.
7. Attach the plastic bottle to the wooden board using the hinges, creating a dispenser unit.
8. Attach the foot pedal to the wooden board near the bottom of the dispenser unit, ensuring it is securely fastened and can be easily pressed with the foot.
9. Connect the foot pedal to the plastic bottle using rubber bands or springs, creating a mechanism that dispenses the hand sanitizer when the pedal is pressed.
10. Fill the plastic bottle with hand sanitizer and close it tightly with the cap.
11. Mount the dispenser unit on a wall using screws or nails, ensuring it is at a convenient height for students to use.
12. Test the hand sanitizer dispenser by pressing the foot pedal and observing the dispensing of the hand sanitizer.
13. Discuss the design, functionality, and importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of germs.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and participation during the activity.
- Evaluate students' understanding of hand hygiene and the engineering and design process through class discussions.
