⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make a Water Vortex Fountain at Home

Grade Level: 7-9

Subject: Physics and Engineering

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow multistep instructions when carrying out experiments or technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6-8.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will learn about the principles of fluid dynamics and centripetal force in relation to creating a water vortex fountain.
- Students will understand the components and techniques involved in constructing a water vortex fountain.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and science behind the water vortex fountain.

Materials:
- Large clear container or fish tank
- Submersible water pump
- Clear plastic tubing
- Funnel
- Clear plastic or glass container (smaller than the large container)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Water

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of fluid dynamics and centripetal force, emphasizing their roles in creating a water vortex.
2. Show examples or videos of different water vortex fountains, explaining the components and mechanisms involved.
3. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own water vortex fountain using simple materials.
4. Place the large clear container or fish tank in a safe location, ensuring it is clean and free from any obstructions.
5. Attach the submersible water pump to the bottom of the container, following the manufacturer's instructions.
6. Connect the clear plastic tubing to the outlet of the water pump, ensuring a secure connection.
7. Place the funnel at the other end of the tubing, ensuring it is positioned above the center of the container.
8. Fill the small plastic or glass container with water and add a few drops of food coloring (optional) to enhance the visual effect.
9. Position the small container over the funnel, allowing the water to flow into the funnel and create a vortex in the larger container.
10. Observe as the water forms a swirling vortex inside the container.
11. Explain the scientific principles involved in creating the water vortex fountain, such as the force of gravity, centripetal force, and fluid dynamics.
12. Encourage students to experiment with different flow rates, water levels, and container sizes to observe the variations in the vortex formation.
13. Discuss the various applications and uses of water vortex fountains, such as in decorative water features or educational demonstrations.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and understanding during the construction of the water vortex fountain.
- Evaluate students' comprehension of the scientific principles through class discussions and their ability to explain the steps and science behind the fountain.
