⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make Flying Robot Butterfly DIY

Grade Level: 6-8

Subject: Engineering and Technology

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6-8.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the basic principles of flight and how they can be applied to create a flying robot butterfly.
- Students will learn about the components and mechanisms involved in constructing a flying robot butterfly.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and techniques used to make the flying robot butterfly.

Materials:
- Lightweight materials (e.g., foam, balsa wood, or plastic)
- Small servo motors
- Wires
- Battery pack
- Remote control or transmitter
- Glue
- Scissors
- Craft materials for decoration (optional)

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the principles of flight, including lift, thrust, drag, and gravity. Show examples of flying creatures like butterflies and birds.
2. Explain to the students that they will be creating their own flying robot butterfly using simple materials and mechanisms.
3. Distribute the materials to each student or group of students.
4. Instruct the students to design and cut out the wings of the butterfly using lightweight materials like foam, balsa wood, or plastic. Encourage creativity in wing design and decoration.
5. Attach small servo motors to the wings using glue, making sure they are securely fastened. These motors will provide the flapping motion to mimic the butterfly's flight.
6. Connect the servo motors to the wires and battery pack according to the manufacturer's instructions.
7. Attach the battery pack and wires to the body of the butterfly, ensuring they are securely connected.
8. Connect the wires to a remote control or transmitter, which will allow the students to control the movement and flight of the robot butterfly.
9. Test the flying robot butterfly by activating the remote control or transmitter and observing the flapping motion of the wings.
10. Encourage students to experiment with different wing movements and control techniques to improve the flight performance of their robot butterflies.
11. Discuss the engineering principles involved in creating the flying robot butterfly, including the design of the wings, the mechanics of the servo motors, and the control mechanisms.
12. Optional: Allow students to decorate their flying robot butterflies with craft materials to personalize their creations.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and participation during the construction of the flying robot butterfly.
- Evaluate students' understanding of flight principles and the engineering and design process through class discussions and their ability to explain the construction steps.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
