⁣Lesson Plan: How to Make Water Lamp Candles DIY

Grade Level: 7-8

Subject: Engineering and Design

Duration: 90 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information clearly.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the principles of buoyancy and how it can be applied to create floating candles.
- Students will learn about the engineering and design process involved in making water lamp candles.
- Students will be able to explain the steps and techniques used to make the water lamp candles.

Materials:
- Glass containers (vases, bowls, etc.)
- Water
- Cooking oil
- Candle wicks
- Candle wax
- Essential oils (optional)
- Decorations (e.g., dried flowers, pebbles, shells)
- Scissors
- Heat-resistant adhesive or hot glue gun
- Matches or lighters
- Safety goggles

Procedure:
1. Begin the lesson by discussing the principles of buoyancy and how it affects the floating of objects in water.
2. Show the students examples of water lamp candles or use images/videos to familiarize them with the final product.
3. Explain to the students that they will be designing and creating their own water lamp candles.
4. Distribute the materials to each student or group of students.
5. Instruct the students to put on safety goggles to ensure their safety while handling the materials.
6. Fill the glass containers with water, leaving some space at the top for the floating candles.
7. In a separate container, melt the candle wax according to the instructions on the package.
8. Add a few drops of essential oils to the melted wax for fragrance (optional).
9. Cut the candle wicks into appropriate lengths and dip them into the melted wax to coat them.
10. Attach one end of the coated wick to the bottom of a small container (e.g., bottle cap) using heat-resistant adhesive or hot glue.
11. Allow the wax to solidify around the wick, creating a floating candle.
12. Place the floating candles on the water-filled glass containers.
13. Decorate the containers with dried flowers, pebbles, shells, or other decorations.
14. Light the candles using matches or lighters, ensuring proper adult supervision.
15. Observe the water lamp candles and discuss their design, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.

Assessment:
- Observe students' engagement and participation during the activity.
- Evaluate students' understanding of the principles of buoyancy and the engineering and design process through class discussions.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
