Grade Level: K-2
Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will unleash their imagination and problem-solving skills by creating 22 unique and fun DIY playhouses in just 5 minutes each. Students will learn to repurpose everyday materials and engage in imaginative play while developing fine motor skills and spatial awareness.
Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
Materials:
- Various recycled materials such as cardboard boxes, plastic containers, milk cartons, egg cartons, paper tubes, etc.
- Craft supplies such as markers, colored pencils, scissors, tape, glue, etc.
- Dolls or figurines for imaginative play (optional)
- Writing paper and pencils
Procedure:
1. Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of imagination and creativity in playtime.
- Show examples of simple DIY playhouses made from everyday materials to inspire students.
2. Playhouse Exploration (10 minutes):
- Provide a variety of recycled materials and craft supplies for students to choose from.
- Introduce a list of 22 DIY playhouse ideas for students to explore.
- Instruct students to select a few playhouses they would like to create and discuss their ideas with a partner.
3. DIY Creation (30 minutes):
- Set a timer for 5 minutes per playhouse and instruct students to work on creating their chosen playhouses within the time limit.
- Encourage students to repurpose materials and think creatively to construct their playhouses.
- Provide guidance and support as needed while students work on their DIY projects.
4. Shape Recognition and Labeling (15 minutes):
