⁣Lesson Plan: Preserving Traditions: Exploring the Ancient Art of Tile Making in Egypt

Duration: 60 minutes

Learning Objectives:
- Understand the significance of preserving cultural traditions
- Explore the history and techniques of tile making in Egypt
- Analyze the impact of one man's dedication in keeping this 200-year-old tradition alive
- Reflect on the importance of cultural heritage and its role in shaping identity

Materials:
- Video: "Preserving Traditions: The Art of Tile Making in Egypt" (link: [insert video link])
- Computers or tablets with internet access (optional)
- Art supplies: paper, pencils, colored pencils, markers, or paints

Procedure:
1. Warm-up (5 minutes):
- Display the title: "How One Man in Egypt Is Keeping This 200-Year-Old Tile Tradition Alive."
- Ask students if they have ever heard of or witnessed the preservation of a cultural tradition.
- Facilitate a brief discussion about the importance of preserving cultural traditions and why they might be valuable.

2. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Show the video "Preserving Traditions: The Art of Tile Making in Egypt."
- Encourage students to take notes during the video about the history, techniques, and significance of tile making in Egypt.

3. Group Discussion (15 minutes):
- Divide students into small groups and provide them with discussion questions:
a. What did you find most interesting or surprising about the video?
b. How do you think the tile-making tradition impacts the culture and identity of Egypt?
c. Why is it important to preserve cultural traditions like this one?
d. How does one man's dedication play a vital role in keeping this tradition alive?

4. Reflection Activity (15 minutes):
- Have students individually reflect on the following prompts:
a. What aspects of your own culture or heritage do you find valuable and worth preserving?
b. How can you contribute to the preservation and celebration of these traditions?

5. Artistic Expression (15 minutes):
- Instruct students to create an artwork inspired by the tile-making tradition in Egypt.
- Encourage students to incorporate elements they learned from the video and their own cultural heritage.

6. Group Sharing (10 minutes):
- Allow students to share their artwork with the class and explain their creative choices.
- Facilitate a class discussion on the different ways cultural traditions can be expressed and celebrated.

He says he’s one of the last still doing this work in Egypt — most other workshops couldn't withstand competition from marble and ceramic tiles.
