⁣Lesson Plan: Reflecting on Holiday Gift-Giving

Grade Level: 6-8

Subject: Social Studies

Duration: 45 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Objectives:
- Students will analyze a personal narrative about holiday gift-giving.
- Students will identify and discuss the motivations behind gift choices.
- Students will reflect on the broader significance of gift-giving during the holiday season.

Materials:
- Printed copies of the text "What I Got My Kids for Christmas" (can be sourced from personal blog posts or online articles)
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Writing utensils

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by asking students to share their experiences and feelings about receiving gifts during the holiday season.
- Discuss the significance of gift-giving in different cultures and traditions.

2. Reading and Analysis (20 minutes):
- Provide each student with a printed copy of the text "What I Got My Kids for Christmas."
- Instruct students to read the text individually and underline or highlight key points or details about the gifts given.
- After reading, ask students to discuss in pairs or small groups what they noticed about the gifts and any potential motivations behind them.

3. Sharing and Group Analysis (10 minutes):
- Bring the students back together and ask each group to share one key point or observation about the gifts mentioned in the text.
- Write these points on the whiteboard or chart paper.
- Facilitate a class discussion, guiding students to analyze the potential motivations behind the gift choices and their impact on the recipients.

4. Reflective Writing (10 minutes):
- Instruct students to individually write a short reflection on the broader significance of gift-giving during the holiday season.
- Encourage them to consider the feelings and intentions behind both giving and receiving gifts.

6. Conclusion (5 minutes):

- Encourage students to reflect on their own gift-giving practices and consider the joy and meaning it can bring to others.
