⁣Lesson Plan: Reflecting on Holiday Gift Giving

Grade Level: 6-8

Subject: Social Studies

Duration: 60 minutes

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Objectives:
- Students will read and analyze a blog post about the gifts the author got their children for Christmas 2020.
- Students will discuss and reflect on the societal values and consumer culture portrayed in the blog post.
- Students will write an informative/explanatory text expressing their own perspectives on holiday gift-giving.

Materials:
- Printed copies of the blog post "What I Got My Kids for Christmas 2020" (can be sourced from online blogs or articles)
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Writing utensils
- Optional: Multimedia resources showcasing different perspectives on holiday gift-giving

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the tradition of gift-giving during the holiday season.
- Ask students to share their experiences and perspectives on receiving gifts.

2. Reading and Analysis (20 minutes):
- Provide each student with a printed copy of the blog post.
- Instruct students to read the blog post individually and underline or highlight key points or evidence provided.
- After reading, ask students to write down their initial thoughts and reactions to the gifts mentioned in the blog post.

3. Small Group Discussion (15 minutes):
- Divide students into small groups and ask them to share their observations and analysis of the blog post.
- Encourage students to discuss the societal values and consumer culture portrayed in the post.
- Instruct each group to select a spokesperson who will present their group's findings to the class.

4. Whole-Class Discussion (10 minutes):
- Bring the students back together for a whole-class discussion.
- Allow each spokesperson to share their group's analysis of the blog post.
- Facilitate a discussion among students, focusing on the impact of consumer culture on holiday gift-giving.

5. Multimedia Exploration (10 minutes):
- If resources are available, show multimedia resources showcasing different perspectives on holiday gift-giving.
- Encourage students to consider alternative viewpoints and the impact of excessive consumerism on individuals and the environment.

6. Informative/Explanatory Writing (10 minutes):
- Instruct students to individually write a short informative/explanatory text expressing their own perspectives on holiday gift-giving.
- Encourage students to consider the societal values they hold and how it influences their approach to gift-giving.

7. Conclusion (5 minutes):
- Summarize the main points discussed during the lesson.
- Emphasize the importance of reflecting on the meaning and impact of holiday gift-giving.
- Encourage students to consider alternative ways to celebrate the holiday season that align with their values.
