⁣Lesson Plan: Writing a Review of OCME Trains' Free Public Rides Weekend

Objectives:
- Students will attend OCME Trains' Free Public Rides Weekend and gather information and experiences for their review.
- Students will write a review of their experience, supporting their claims with valid reasoning and relevant evidence.
- Students will practice persuasive writing techniques and effectively communicating their opinions.

Materials:
- Transportation arrangements to OCME Trains' location
- Writing materials for students

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the purpose of a review and its role in informing and persuading others.
- Engage students in a conversation about their previous experiences with public rides or events and their expectations for OCME Trains' Free Public Rides Weekend.

2. Attend OCME Trains' Free Public Rides Weekend (2-4 hours):

The Orange County Model Engineers club in Costa Mesa, CA, has been giving FREE model train rides to the public every third weekend of the month for years. With almost 5 miles of railway, these ⅛ scale trains are the perfect size for kids to ride and enjoy. Just make sure your child’s over 31 inches so they can enjoy the ride.Busiest when it opens, the parking lot fills fast in the morning, and the long lines look a little intimidating. But thankfully, OCME’s constant flow of trains gets the line moving more quickly than you’d expect, and by lunchtime, you can usually catch a train within a few minutes. Once you’re on, the train takes you on a 12 minute, two-loop stroll through its grounds. As returning visitors, we were happy to see that the loop route can change course or even directions from month to month.In between rides, visitors can buy snacks and train-centric toys inside their Mackerel Flats and Goat Hill Junction Railroad station. Or even stroll the paths around the tracks. We like taking the girls out there to run off some energy. Along the path you’ll find benches and even a picnic table by the train's bridge to relax.In total, we ended up staying for about an hour and a half.
