⁣⁣Lesson Plan: Are These Cleaning Hacks Fact or Fiction? Debunking Common Cleaning Myths

Grade Level: 9-12

Subject: Science/Home Economics

Objective: Students will investigate and analyze common cleaning hacks to determine whether they are fact or fiction, debunking any cleaning myths through scientific reasoning.

Materials Needed:
- List of cleaning hacks (prepared in advance or generated by the students)
- Cleaning supplies (e.g., vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, etc.)
- Experimental materials (e.g., dirty surfaces, stains, etc.)
- Safety equipment (gloves, goggles, etc.)
- Recording sheets or notebooks for observations and data collection

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Engage students by discussing the prevalence of cleaning hacks and their popularity on social media and the internet.
- Explain that the goal of the lesson is to examine these hacks scientifically and determine whether they are effective or merely myths.
- Encourage students to share any cleaning hacks they have heard or tried.

2. Generating Cleaning Hack List (15 minutes):
- In small groups or as a class, have students generate a list of cleaning hacks they would like to investigate.
- Ask them to consider hacks related to common household items and substances, such as vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice.
- Make sure to have a comprehensive list that covers a variety of cleaning tasks.

3. Research and Hypothesis (15 minutes):
- Instruct students to research each cleaning hack on their list and gather information on the scientific principles behind them.
- Have students develop hypotheses for each cleaning hack, predicting whether they believe it will be effective or not.
- Encourage critical thinking and reasoning based on scientific principles.

4. Experimental Testing (40 minutes):
- Distribute cleaning supplies, experimental materials, and safety equipment to each student or group.
- Instruct students to conduct experiments to test each cleaning hack on their list.
- Remind them to follow proper safety protocols and record their observations and data accurately.
- Allow students to collaborate and exchange ideas during the experimentation process.

5. Data Analysis and Conclusion (20 minutes):
- Have students analyze their experimental data and observations.
- In small groups or individually, instruct them to compare their findings to their initial hypotheses.
- Guide students in drawing conclusions based on their data and scientific reasoning.
- Encourage them to discuss any discrepancies between their expectations and the actual results.

6. Presentation and Discussion (15 minutes):
- Have each student/group present their findings and conclusions to the class.
- Encourage classmates to ask questions and engage in a discussion about the validity of the cleaning hacks and the scientific principles involved.
- Facilitate a class discussion on the importance of critical thinking and scientific experimentation when evaluating popular cleaning hacks.

7. Reflection and Extension (10 minutes):
- Ask students to reflect on the lesson and share any insights or new understandings they gained.
- Discuss potential applications of scientific reasoning and experimentation in everyday life, such as evaluating other popular myths or claims.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
