⁣⁣Lesson Plan: Discover the Magic of Magnetic Slime: A Fun and Educational Science Experiment!

Grade Level: 6-8

Subject: Science

Objective: Students will learn about the properties of magnetism and polymers by creating their own magnetic slime through a hands-on science experiment.

Materials Needed:
- ½ cup of school glue
- 1 teaspoon of borax powder
- 1 tablespoon of iron oxide powder (magnetic powder)
- ½ cup of water
- Plastic mixing bowl
- Plastic spoon or stir stick
- Magnetic objects (such as magnets or iron filings)
- Writing materials for reflection

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of polymers and their importance in everyday life.
- Introduce the topic of magnetism and explain how it relates to the creation of magnetic slime.

2. Safety Precautions (5 minutes):
- Emphasize the importance of safety during the experiment, including the use of gloves and avoiding contact with the eyes or mouth.
- Instruct students to handle the materials carefully and wash their hands after the experiment.

3. Mixing the Ingredients (15 minutes):
- Instruct students to pour ½ cup of water into a plastic mixing bowl.
- Add ½ cup of school glue to the water and mix thoroughly.
- Slowly add 1 teaspoon of borax powder to the mixture while stirring continuously until the slime begins to form.

4. Adding Magnetic Powder (10 minutes):
- Instruct students to add 1 tablespoon of iron oxide powder (magnetic powder) to the slime mixture.
- Encourage them to mix the powder evenly throughout the slime.

5. Exploring Magnetic Properties (20 minutes):
- Distribute small pieces of the magnetic slime to each student or group.
- Provide magnetic objects, such as magnets or iron filings, for students to experiment with.
- Instruct them to observe how the magnetic slime reacts to the magnetic objects and discuss their findings.

6. Discussion and Reflection (15 minutes):
- Engage students in a discussion about their observations and the properties of magnetism demonstrated by the magnetic slime.
- Encourage them to reflect on the process of making the slime and any challenges or surprises they encountered.
- Facilitate a reflection session where students can write or draw their thoughts and observations from the experiment.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6-8.2: Write informative/explanatory texts.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6-8.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence.
- NGSS.MS-PS1-2: Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.

Make magnetic slime using Elmers PVA glue. Add iron filings and watch what happens when you introduce a magnet. Simple and fun science experiment. The neodymium magnets are really strong.
