Grade Level: K-5

Subject: Art

Objective: Students will learn how to carve a pumpkin in a creative and unique way by creating a design of a pumpkin eating a smaller pumpkin.

Materials Needed:
- Pumpkins (one large and one small per student)
- Carving tools (child-friendly and safe)
- Markers or pencils
- Newspapers or table covers
- Optional: LED candles or tea lights

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin by discussing the tradition of carving pumpkins during Halloween and the different designs people typically create.
- Introduce the concept of carving a pumpkin eating a smaller pumpkin as a creative and unique design.
- Show examples or images of pumpkins carved in this style to inspire students.

2. Safety Precautions (5 minutes):
- Discuss basic safety rules and precautions when carving pumpkins.
- Explain the importance of adult supervision and proper handling of carving tools.
- Emphasize the importance of using child-friendly tools and being cautious while carving.

3. Planning the Design (10 minutes):
- Provide each student with a large and a small pumpkin, markers or pencils, and newspapers or table covers.
- Instruct students to plan their design by drawing it on the larger pumpkin using the marker or pencil.
- Encourage students to be creative and think about the positioning and facial features of both pumpkins.

4. Carving Process (30 minutes):
- Assist students in carving the larger pumpkin by cutting out the top and scooping out the seeds and pulp.
- Instruct students to carefully carve the design they drew on the pumpkin, making sure to create a mouth opening for the smaller pumpkin.
- Help students carve the smaller pumpkin to fit inside the mouth opening of the larger pumpkin.
- Optional: Insert an LED candle or tea light in the smaller pumpkin to create a glowing effect.

5. Display and Reflection (10 minutes):
- Allow students to display their carved pumpkins in a designated area, such as a classroom or school hallway.
- Lead a class discussion about the process of carving the pumpkins, asking students to share their experiences and favorite parts of the activity.
- Encourage students to reflect on their creativity and problem-solving skills during the carving process.
