⁣⁣Lesson Plan: Looking for Easy DIY Slime Ideas? Check out These 4 Fun and Simple Recipes!

Grade Level: 3-5

Subject: Science/Chemistry

Objective: Students will explore different methods of creating slime through hands-on experimentation, while learning about the properties of materials and chemical reactions.

Materials Needed:
- White school glue
- Borax
- Liquid starch
- Cornstarch
- Water
- Measuring cups
- Mixing bowls
- Mixing utensils
- Food coloring (optional)
- Glitter (optional)

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Engage students by discussing the properties of slime and its popularity as a sensory toy.
- Introduce the concept of DIY slime and explain that students will be creating their own using simple ingredients and methods.

2. Safety Precautions (5 minutes):
- Discuss safety precautions, such as avoiding contact with eyes, washing hands after handling the slime, and not ingesting it.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions (20 minutes):
- Provide students with step-by-step instructions for each of the following slime recipes:

Recipe 1: Basic Glue and Borax Slime
a) Measure 1 cup of white school glue and pour it into a mixing bowl.
b) In a separate container, dissolve 1 teaspoon of borax in 1 cup of warm water.
c) Slowly pour the borax solution into the glue while stirring continuously.
d) Mix until the slime forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
e) Remove the slime from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it reaches the desired consistency.

Recipe 2: Liquid Starch Slime
a) Measure 1 cup of white school glue and pour it into a mixing bowl.
b) Add a few drops of food coloring (optional) and mix until desired color is achieved.
c) Gradually add liquid starch to the glue while stirring continuously.
d) Keep adding and mixing until the slime starts to come together and is no longer sticky.
e) Remove the slime from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it reaches the desired consistency.

Recipe 3: Cornstarch Slime
a) Measure 1 cup of cornstarch and pour it into a mixing bowl.
b) Gradually add water to the cornstarch while stirring continuously.
c) Keep adding and stirring until the mixture thickens and becomes slimy.
d) Optional: Add a few drops of food coloring or glitter for extra flair.
e) Remove the slime from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it reaches the desired consistency.

Recipe 4: Fluffy Slime
a) Measure 1 cup of white school glue and pour it into a mixing bowl.
b) Add approximately 2 cups of shaving cream to the glue and mix well.
c) Add a few drops of food coloring (optional) and mix until desired color is achieved.
d) In a separate cup, mix 1 teaspoon of borax with 1 cup of warm water.
e) Slowly pour the borax solution into the mixing bowl, stirring continuously.
f) Continue mixing until the fluffy slime starts to form and pull away from the sides of the bowl.
g) Remove the slime from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it reaches the desired consistency.

4. Observations and Experiments (15 minutes):
- Allow students to observe and play with each type of slime they have created.
- Encourage them to compare the textures, stretchiness, and other characteristics of the different slimes.
- Ask students to brainstorm and conduct experiments to test how the slime properties change when altering ingredients or ratios.

5. Clean-up and Reflection (10 minutes):
- Instruct students to clean up their work areas and properly dispose of any leftover materials.
- Facilitate a discussion on the scientific process and the role of experimentation in understanding the properties of materials.
- Have students reflect on their experience making different types of slime and the concepts they learned about chemical reactions and material properties.

Common Core Labels Correlations:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.4.3: Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
