⁣⁣Lesson Plan: Throwback Taste Test: Kids Try Snacks from the 90s


Grade Levels: 3-8

Objective:
- To introduce students to popular snacks from the 90s and explore the cultural and culinary trends of that era.
- To encourage critical thinking and reflection on past and present food preferences.

Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues.

Materials:
- Assorted snacks popular in the 90s (e.g., Dunkaroos, Gushers, Fruit By the Foot, Bubble Tape, etc.)
- Scorecards for taste testing (downloadable/printable)
- Notebooks or paper for students to write their opinions and reflections
- Optional: Digital camera or smartphone for students to document the taste testing process

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of food trends and how they change over time.
- Ask students if they have heard of or tried any snacks from the 90s.

2. Snack Taste Testing (20 minutes)
- Present the assortment of 90s snacks to the students.
- Instruct students to taste each snack and use the scorecards to rate them based on taste, appearance, and overall appeal.
- Encourage students to take notes on their observations and initial reactions.

3. Opinion Writing (15 minutes)
- Provide students with notebooks or paper to write their opinion pieces on the snacks they tasted.
- Instruct students to support their opinions with reasons and evidence from their taste testing experience.

4. Collaborative Discussion (15 minutes)
- Divide the class into small groups to discuss their opinions and findings.
- Instruct students to take turns sharing their favorite and least favorite snacks, and engage in respectful discussions about their preferences.

5. Whole Class Sharing (10 minutes)
- Have each small group present their discussions and opinions to the whole class.
- Facilitate a discussion about the similarities and differences in preferences and the cultural context of food trends.
- Encourage students to reflect on how food trends have changed since the 90s.
