Lesson Plan: Want to Learn How to Make the BEST Fluffy Slime? Follow These Simple Steps for Hours of Fun!
Grade Level: 3-5
Subject: Science/Chemistry
Objective: Students will learn the scientific process of creating fluffy slime, exploring the concepts of chemical reactions and polymer formation.
Materials Needed:
- White school glue
- Shaving cream
- Contact lens solution (containing boric acid)
- Baking soda
- Mixing bowl
- Measuring cups
- Mixing utensil
- Food coloring (optional)
Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Engage students by discussing polymers and their importance in everyday life.
- Introduce the concept of fluffy slime and its properties.
- Explain that students will be creating their own fluffy slime using simple ingredients.
2. Safety Precautions (5 minutes):
- Discuss safety precautions, such as not ingesting the slime, avoiding contact with eyes, and washing hands after handling the ingredients.
3. Step-by-Step Instructions (20 minutes):
- Provide students with a step-by-step guide on how to make fluffy slime:
a) Measure 1 cup of white school glue and pour it into a mixing bowl.
b) Add approximately 2 cups of shaving cream to the glue and mix well.
c) Add a few drops of food coloring (optional) and mix until desired color is achieved.
d) In a separate cup, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of contact lens solution.
e) Slowly add the baking soda and contact lens solution mixture to the mixing bowl, stirring continuously.
f) Continue mixing until the slime begins to form and pull away from the sides of the bowl.
g) Remove the slime from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it reaches the desired consistency.
4. Observations and Experiments (15 minutes):
- Allow students to observe and play with their fluffy slime.
- Encourage them to describe its texture, stretchiness, and other characteristics.
- Ask students to brainstorm and conduct experiments to test the effects of adding more or less shaving cream, changing the amount of glue, or altering the contact lens solution ratio.
5. Clean-up and Reflection (10 minutes):
- Instruct students to clean up their work areas and properly dispose of any leftover materials.
- Facilitate a discussion on the scientific process and the role of experimentation in understanding the properties of materials.
- Have students reflect on their experience making fluffy slime and the concepts they learned about chemical reactions and polymers.
